The story of Ashabul Kahfi as a representation of the strength of faith: A study of QS interpretation. Al-Kahf Verses 9–26

Abstract

The story of the Companions of the Cave (Ashabul Kahfi), recorded in Surah Al-Kahfi (verses 9–26), is a Quranic narrative rich in theological, historical, and moral significance. It does not merely recount the tale of faithful youths who sought refuge in a cave to preserve their creed; it also offers profound reflections on the relationship between faith and power, the concept of time from a Divine perspective, and the nature of God’s protection for His believing servants. This article analyzes the story of Ashabul Kahfi through the lens of exegesis (*tafsir*) of Surah Al-Kahfi: 9–26, employing a thematic-historical exegetical approach. The discussion focuses on the *asbāb al-nuzūl* (circumstances of revelation), a critical analysis of relevant hadith narrations, a comparison of classical and contemporary interpretations, and the contextualization of the verses' values ​​within modern life. The study utilizes a library research methodology, drawing upon primary sources—such as exegetical texts, works on *asbāb al-nuzūl*, and hadith collections—as well as secondary sources, including scholarly books and academic journals. The findings indicate that the story of Ashabul Kahfi underscores the vital importance of steadfast faith, a critical stance toward oppressive power, and absolute trust in God’s decree as the fundamental basis for confronting social and ideological pressures across the ages.
