Methods and Operational Steps of Maqashidi Exegesis Research

Abstract

Maqashidi exegesis is an interpretive approach to the Qur’an that focuses on uncovering the objectives (maqashid) of the Shariah behind the text of the verses. This approach emerged as a response to the limitations of classical exegetical methods that tend to be textual, thereby requiring a stronger methodological framework to bridge the text with contemporary realities. This article aims to elaborate on the methods and operational steps of maqashidi exegesis research in a systematic manner. By employing library research and descriptive-analytical analysis, the study finds that maqashidi exegesis emphasizes the identification of general objectives (maqashid ‘ammah), specific objectives (maqashid khashshah), and particular objectives (maqashid juz’iyyah). These are then operationalized through several stages: determining the Qur’anic object of study, conducting linguistic analysis, contextualizing historical settings, identifying maqāṣid, and applying their relevance to modern life. The findings affirm that maqashidi exegesis offers not only a hermeneutical approach but also an operational framework that enables the Qur’an to remain a dynamic, responsive, and solution-oriented guide for life.
